During his career, Albert Bierstadt was one of the wealthiest and most succesful painters alive. His enormous paintings depicting the newly accessible American West sold for great amounts into public and private collections. However after the people had lost interest in the impressionistic style of the Hudson River School, Bierstadt soon lost a lot of money and finally even declared bankruptcy in 1895.
