As Gros was a student, Josephine Bonaparte introduced him to Napoleon in 1797 in order to get Roma's Prize. Napoleon received him in his court and made him a direct witness for his battles and military life. These historic paintings of Napoleon's life is what make Antoine-Jean Gros such a famous painter today.
Antoine-Jean Gros was first trained by his father, later he became a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. Although he revered David and became one of his favorite pupils, Gros had a passionate nature and he was drawn more to the color and vibrancy of Rubens and the great Venetian painters than to the Neoclassical purity of his master.
