Armand Guillaumin, whose full name was Jean-Baptiste-Armand Guillaumin, is probably the least known impressionist. Although Guillaumin also exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, some of the leading impressionist painters (Edgar Degas and Claude Monet) did not make a secret of the fact that they didn't like the colourful paintings of Guillaumin. Towards the end of Armand Guillaumin's career, the colourfulness in his paintings have brought him very close to Fauvism.
Even though Guillaumin wasn't very much appreciated by some of the leading impressionists, he became friends with Vincent van Gogh with whom's work his own had certain affinities.
Guillaumin was far from the most succesful impressionist painter. A remarkable fact is that Guillaumin did manage to become completely financially independent, not through his painting, but by winning the French lottery in 1891.
