Benjamin West is known for his large scale historical and religious paintings, which use expressive figures, colours and compositional schemes to help the spectator to identify with the scene represented. West called this "epic representation". Some of his most famous paintings include 'The Death of General Wolfe', 'The Treaty of Penn with the Indians', 'Queen Charlotte', 'Narcissus and Echo', 'King Lear' and 'Death on a Pale Horse'.
