The artist that first inspired a young Briget Riley was Pointillist Georges Seurat. She started creating her own pointillistic landscapes which eventually led her to be interested in the pure optical effects of Op Art.
Following a major retrospective in the early 1970s, Riley began traveling extensively. After a trip to Egypt in the early 1980s, where she was inspired by colourful hieroglyphic decoration, Riley began to explore colour and contrast.
