Quote"The pure, frank sentiments we hold in our hearts are the only truthful sources of art. A painting which does not take its inspiration from the heart is nothing more than futile juggling. All authentic art is conceived at a sacred moment and nourished in a blessed hour; an inner impulse creates it, often without the artist being aware of it."

Interesting Like a true Romanticist, Caspar David Friedrich never got rich by painting. Up to then it was normal for clients to order a particular painting in the style they liked it, but Romanticists rather painted what they felt like and never really accepted these questions from possible clients. His widow even had to go to the Russian tsar to beg for any financial help. Tsar Nicolas I was willing to help her because he was one of the few people who had already heard of Friedrich and even bought a few paintings from him.
