Eva Gonzales, was born on April 19, 1849 in Paris, France. In 1865, she began her professional training and took lessons in drawing. In 1869, she met Edouard Manet and became both his student and model. She exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1870. From that year on she submitted work every year to the Salon. Until 1872, she was strongly influenced by Manet but later developed her own, more personal style. Her watercolors with their soft forms and bright colors achieved great success. She married in 1879. Gonzalès' career was tragically brief for she died on May 6, 1883 at the age of 34 during child labour.
