Franz Marc is probably best known for his paintings of animals, who he considered creatures in perfect harmony with nature.
Examples include 'The Little Yellow Horses', 'The Large Blue Horses', 'Cat on a Yellow Pillow', 'Birds', 'Yellow Cox' and 'Blue-Black Fox'. His latter works became more abstract; like 'Fighting Forms'.

The name Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), which was the German expressionists movement Franz Marc started with Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, originated from
a complex mixture of the millennium, Saint George, the Second Coming, and the colour blue being the colour of male principle spirituality.
Franz Marc signed up to be a volunteer in the German army during World War I. Unfortunately he was killed, at age 36, in full battle near Verdun.
