Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self portraits. Frida Kahlo said she painted herself because she was often alone and because she aws the person she knew best.
Examples of symbolic self portraits are 'Las Dos Fridas' (The Two Frida's), 'Self Portrait with Monkey', 'Diego on my Mind', 'Frida and Diego' and 'Self Portrait with Necklace'.
Other paintings include 'Fruits of the Earth', but are probably not as well known as her self portraits.

| Interesting |
Kahlo was often associated with Surrealism, and although she did exhibit with European Surrealists, she disputed this label.
Frida Kahlo married Diego Rivera, a famous Mexican artist. Their marriage consisted of love, affairs with other people, creative bonding, hate, and a divorce in 1940 that lasted only for one year. Their marriage has been called the union between an elephant and a dove, because Diego was huge and very fat, and Frida was small (a little over 5 feet) and slender.
Frida was bisexual and did have affairs with several women. Kahlo had an unconventional appearance, including pronounced eyebrows and a thin moustache which she refused to remove.
