Gabriele Münter had a relationship of over ten years with fellow expressionist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky introduced her to German expressionism and is believed to be of an enormous influence. Gabriele Münter even joined the art group Der Blaue Reiter, of which Kandinsky was the co-founder. However at the beginning of World War I their relationship ended.
Currently, the museum with the biggest collection of Gabriele Münter's paintings is the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. Gabriele Münter donated many of her and Kandinsky's paintings to this museum in 1957.
