Gerrit Dou was one of the first pupils of fellow Baroque painter Rembrandt. Dou also had some pupils himself; his most celebrated pupil was Frans van Mieris the Elder.
Although Gerrit Dou's paintings often were very small in size, he was a master of details and wanted everything to be absolutely perfect. It is even said that he spent five days in painting a hand. This ofcourse was against the will of his models, who were often unwilling to give him the time that he deemed necessary.
