Matisse kept painting and making works till his death. Though Matisse suffered from cancer and had to stay in a wheelchair for the last years of his life, this did not stop him from continuing what he always loved to do.
Matisse trained young artists during his lifetime, but refused to accept payment because he wished to maintain the right to quit teaching at any time.
Matisse is best known for his paintings and cutouts, but starting in the 1920s he also produced over 50 bronze sculptures including the Seated Nude (1925).
