Jacob Jordaens' Baroque paintings contain the same dark colours and voluptuous shapes as Peter Paul Rubens' work. However, the pupil made his colours slightly heavier than Rubens and he painted his lush subjects with rougher strokes. In addition, he added the effect of light and shadows which he had seen in Caravaggio’s ‘chiaroscuro’.

Jacob Jordaens is sometimes criticised for the way he painted: often blurry, bad drawn faces and compositions with not a lot of thought in it. This might also have something to do with the cooperation of Jordaen's students to his paintings.
