Quote"Painting is a science and should be pursued as an inquiry into the laws of nature. Why, then, may not a landscape be considered as a branch of natural philosophy, of which pictures are but experiments?"

Interesting John Constable wasn't very succesful during his lifetime with his landscape paintings. He only sold about 20 paintings during his entire life. However due to the inheritance of his father, a succesful merchant, Constable never led a poor life.

Unlike during his lifetime, Constable now does receive the credit he deserves. John Constable is often referred to as the father of modern landscape painting.
