Lyonel Feininger started his career as a caricaturist for magazines such as "Harpers Round Table", "Humoristische Blätter", and "Berliner Tageblatt". After being a caricaturist for more than 20 years, he only really started working as a painter in 1907.
Feininger also had intermittent activity as a pianist and composer, with several piano compositions and fugues for organ extant.
His son, Andreas Feininger, became famous as a photographer of New York City.
