Interesting Théodore Géricault's 'The Raft of the Medusa' first made his appearance at the 1819 Salon in Paris, and although it received the gold medal it was also honoured with a big controversy. In 1816 the frigate Medusa crashed and left 150 passengers alone on the shipwreck. When the raft was found two weeks later, only 15 people had survived. The case was silenced by the government, and when, a year later, it became public knowledge, it caused rage and criticism of governmental negligence and corruption.
