THOMAS EAKINS' YOUTH

Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins was born on July 25, 1844 in Philadelphia (USA). He graduated at the High School of Philadelphia and then went to Paris to study art at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He then returned to Philadelphia and started teaching painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fina Arts.


THOMAS EAKINS AS AN ARTIST

Eakins' emphasis was on classical techniques of working from life, including use of nude models which brought puritanical criticism against him at the time. Eakins was a pioneer in the use of photography as an aid to composition.

Though his is not a household name, Eakins is regarded as one of finest realist painters and portraitists of his day, and one of the top American artists of any period.


THOMAS EAKINS' DEATH

Thomas Eakins died on June 25, 1916.
