Quote"One shouldn't believe in all those so-called innovations. There is only one nature and only one way to see it. Nowadays, they want to succeed too fast, this is how they go about inventing new aesthetics, pointillism, pipisme! All this is just to make noise."

Interesting In the 19th century, when he ofcourse was still alive and painting, William Bouguereau was considered as the best painter in the world; most likely to be remembered in the 20th century. Since then, surprisingly, Bouguereau lost a lot of his fame as today he is rather unknown by the general public. As a result his first modern exhibition only took place in 1974 at the New York Cultural Center.

William Bouguereau became a strong supporter of female artists when he married his second wife, Elizabeth Jane Gardner. He used his influence as a famous painter to open many French art institutions to women for the first time.
