William Holman Hunt's most famous paintings were religiously inspired, eg. 'The Light of the World' and 'Shadow of Death'. Other paintings by Hunt include 'The Hireling Shepherd' and 'The Lady of Shalott'.

William Holman Hunt founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 together with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Hunt started this art group as a rebellion against the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds at the Royal Academy of Arts.
William Holman Hunt's works were not initially successful, and were widely attacked in the art press for their alleged clumsiness and ugliness. This ofcourse was in direct relation with Hunt's rejection of the artistic standards.
