In Antwerp, for the first time since the seventies unknown work by Pieter Bruegel the Elder surfaced. The landscape will be shown in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh.

The drawing of a mountain landscape with two passengers is the first unknown drawing of the artist to show up since the seventies. According to the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, the work “both in composition and drawing techniques has all characteristics of Bruegel‘s work from the period 1552-1555.”

The museum describes the drawing as invaluable. “Bruegel has a very limited oeuvre: forty sixty paintings and prints. Such a rare work of such a great artist hardly ever appears.”
