Leonardo da Vinci self-portrait discovered

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Italian researchers believe they have unearthed a previously unknown self-portrait by Leonardo da Vinci drawn when the artist was a young man.

The faint pencil sketch has emerged after being hidden for 500 years in one of the Renaissance genius’s most famous manuscripts, the “Codex on the Flight of Birds”, written between 1490 and 1505.

Josh Keyes

Josh Keyes is an American contemporary artist. He looks at the themes of environmental awareness and humanity’s influence on the planet with his unique paintings of surreal cross-sections featuring animals and manmade artefacts.

At the core, my desire has always been to create images that fix in the mind. There are certain paintings like Van Gogh’s self portraits, or Francis Bacon’s screaming baboon, or a Hokusai print, that have a lasting trace on the mind. The combination of emotional intensity with a well-composed image is what I strive to accomplish in my work. For me, the most important thing is that the way or style I work in must have room to grow and change. Ultimately, the work should be flexible enough to incorporate and hold any idea or issue that interests me.

A limited edition print of Josh Keyes’ Thunder is currently for sale on Ebay.
