Liberty Leading the People (La Liberté guidant le peuple) is a painting by Eugène Delacroix to commemorate the July Revolution. The July Revolution in 1830 was a revolt by the middle class against Bourbon King Charles X which forced him out of office and replaced him with the Orléanist King Louis-Philippe. A woman personifying Liberty leads the people forward over the bodies of the fallen, holding the tricolore flag of the French Revolution in one hand and brandishing a bayonet with the other.
